Swine Flu

It seems that each year we face a new infectious disease - West Nile Virus, S.A.R.S., Bird Flu, MRSA or, this year, H1N1 (Swine Flu). While some diseases pose a more serious threat than others, cleaning and restoration professionals must consider how a specific infection is spread, because the mechanism of transmission controls what action should be taken and why. Since H1N1 is a hot topic, it may be helpful to understand how it's transmitted.

H1N1 is a viral disease. A virus invades a cell then converts its DNA to make more of the virus. A common method of H1N1 transmission is through the movement of viral particles from the mucous membrane of an infected person to the mucous membrane of another. For example, when an infected person coughs or sneezes they aerosolize viral particles that can be inhaled. Cleaning can do little to stop this transmission.

Another route of transmission is person to surface to person contact. For example, a person coughs; those particles land on their hand then that hand shakes another hand or touches a light switch. The uninfected person then scratches an eye or the nose thus transferring the viral particles and the next case of H1N1 begins.

About Mixing Chemicals

In the cleaning and restoration industry, it seems many people have a deep-seated desire to be a bit of a chemist or cook, mixing different chemicals to see what happens and how the concoctions work. This type of experimenting may be okay with chocolate chip cookies, but not necessarily with chemical cleaning or restoration products. It's important to follow chemical label directions.

What can happen if you ignore this advice? It is pretty well-known that when substances like acid and chlorine bleach, or ammonia and chlorine bleach, are mixed a toxic gas is released, but not as well known that certain cleaning agents will neutralize each other when mixed.. A great example would be a general purpose carpet detergent and a quaternary- based antistat. That combination may sound like a good idea, but the problem is that the antistat molecule has a positive electrical charge and the surfactants in many carpet detergents have a negative charge. When mixed together, these opposite charges stick to each other and the result is a whole bunch of microscopic grease balls. So, to repeat what we said earlier: follow chemical label directions. Before you try any mixing, call the manufacturer of the product and get their advice first.

Keep your eyes open for Symptoms of Mold Exposure

When various illness symptoms arise in people, exposure to mold is not usually even pointed out as a possibility. Hopefully with news of mold dangers becoming more mainstream, this will change. Mold exposure has the ability to cause serious health problems for humans, just as viruses and infections do.

The following list are just some of the onset Symptoms of Mold Exposure to look for. Of course these symptoms can be due to various other illnesses, but this simply illustrates that Mold should not be ruled out.

Eye Irritation - Redness and watering of the eyes is easily dismissed as allergic reactions when in fact these symptoms can be caused by mold exposure in the home or office.

Headache - Of course headaches are common, but chronic headaches, especially migraines can very well be blamed on the exposure to Mold. Headache sufferers can be very sensitive to certain triggers and mold can be easily be one of them.

Rash - Skin rashes caused by Mold exposure can happen not by direct contact with the mold, but also by simply inhaling the toxic fumes emanated from the  mold source.

Sore Throat - Speaking with a hoarse throat and the raw feeling that you feel when swallowing can be indications mold exposure. Mold spores can become lodged in your throat, irritating sensitive membranes.

Breathing Trouble - This symptom is perhaps the most notorious of Mold exposure symptoms. Breathing airborne mold spores can cause serious respiratory difficulties in some people. Though more prevalent in those with allergies, the very young and the very old, and in some cases, Asthma may even develop. For those that already suffer from Asthma, Mold exposure should be looked at as a primary suspect in the triggering of their Asthma attacks..

Sinus Problems - Runny nose more often than you’d like? This can also be a strong indicator of mold exposure, and can be caused by an allergy to the Mold spores, or the nose membranes becoming irritated by the spores. This symptom is easily misdiagnosed as the product of a head cold or seasonal allergy, but Mold as a causing factor, should be explored.

Fatigue - The feeling of being tired that lasts for several days that can’t be explained with sleep deprivation should raise a flag to look at Mold exposure as a very possible culprit.

LANDLORD ALLOWED WATER LEAKS TO GO UNREPAIRED

PHOENIX — A Phoenix jury has awarded $3.3 million to a woman who blamed her mold exposure and related illnesses on her landlord’s negligence in failing to make timely repairs. Minium v. Pillar Communities LLC, et al., No. CV2004-014906 (Ariz. Super. Ct., Maricopa Cty.).

The nine jurors reportedly deliberated for two hours before reaching a unanimous verdict in favor of plaintiff Robin Minium and against her former landlord, Pillar communities LLC. The defendant is one of the largest developers and landlords in the Greater Phoenix area, with more than 4,000 apartment units, according to a trial report. Minium is a former executive with American Express who sued
Pillar in 2004, complaining that Pillar failed to warn of mold remediation in neighboring apartments and allowed water leaks to go unrepaired until mold permeated her building.

She alleged that she and other tenants had complained to Pillar of water leaks and of feeling ill before Pillar paid for remediation projects in other apartments.
Minium said she moved from her apartment in 2002, and she complained that Pillar lost or destroyed her possessions, including a family Bible, dishes, quilts, furniture and inherited items. Pillar asserted that the items were abandoned.

Trial on Minium’s claims began on April 14 before Judge Craig Blakey, and ended on April 22. At trial, Melanie Molenar, Pillar’s executive vice-president, testified that Pillar intentionally did not warn Minium about remediation efforts in other apartments because it felt residents were safe. Pillar also relied on allergist Miriam Anand, M.D., who testified that mold can’t cause permanent or long-term
injury. Expert witnesses for Minium included Mark Van Ert, Ph.D., CIH, of Tucson, Ariz., who opined that, based on the remediation reports, Minium suffered from mold exposures sufficient to cause illnesses.

She also relied on Michael Gray, M.D., of Benson, Ariz., who concluded that Minium has disabling cognitive and physical injuries caused by mold exposure, and Tucson, Ariz., psychologist Robert Crago, Ph.D., of Tucson, who found through testing that Minium suffers a loss of cognitive abilities. Andrea and Adam Watters of the Watters Law Firm in Tucson represent Minium. Kendall Steele of Jardine, Hickman, Baker & Houston in Phoenix represents Pillar Communities.

USmold… an integral part of The DepHyze Revolution.

For decades, the U.S. Military's standard protocol for decontaminating soldiers, vehicles, and equipment that had been exposed to biological or chemical weapons and contaminants was to wash them in concentrated bleach; Unfortunately, not only did this make soldiers sick and corrode or destroy the treated equipment, but bleach did not effectively neutralize the contaminants. The Military was in need of a better solution.

In the 1990’s, the U.S. Department of Defense, requested that the Sandia National Laboratory develop a revolutionary formula for a new type of decontaminant, designed to safely neutralize virtually all types of biological and chemical warfare agents. Sandia's discovery was a true breakthrough, unlike anything the world has seen, prompting them to patent the formula. Until recently, this formula was only available to the Military and certain Federal agencies and first-responders to prepare against terrorist attacks involving biological and/or chemical Weapons of Mass Destruction.

As the Leader in Mold Inspection and Removal, USmold, Inc. immediately became a distributor of this patented formulation. DepHyze and Symagin are Tionicon Industries trademarked names for these groundbreaking formulations. USmold uses DepHyze exclusively for all of its Commercial, Residential, and Marine Mold Cleaning and Remediation procedures.

It’s Not Drama… Mold really Can make You Sick.

Although mold is an everyday part of our environment, indoor mold can make you very sick! Mold releases tiny spores that reproduce, which contaminate the air we breathe. Mold-related illness is often misdiagnosed because of both Doctor’s and Patients not even being aware that there might be a mold issue.

Toxic mold commonly occurs in damp, humid areas of the house including behind walls and appliances, and black molds are the most dangerous. They can actually cause allergies and sicknesses that can be life-threatening. This strain of mold, especially in Florida, can be brutal. What makes things worse is that Mold infestation can be difficult to detect. USmold’s testing procedures are the most effective way to properly determine the quality of your indoor air, and this is a safety measure that everyone should take to ensure that the indoor air that they and their Loved ones breathe is safe. Please, especially if there are Infants, Pregnant women, Elderly, or Asthma Sufferers in your household or in your business, get the dwelling tested. Visit www.USmoldInc.com for more on Mold Testing and Removal in Florida.

The End of Bleach.

Anyone that is versed in Mold Removal will tell you that Bleach is totally ineffective against actual mold remediation. It is remarkable that DepHyze is strong enough for the U.S. Government to use in addressing the threat of WMD’s… DepHyze has an unprecedented, and unrivaled kill-rate efficacy, yet it is still Much Safer to Humans and Pets than household bleach, and Much More Effective, even as a disinfectant.

Could DepHyze usher in the end of bleach in households? In time, as more people hear about this breakthrough, USmold believes the answer is definitely, “Yes.” This is truly the most dramatic breakthrough in disinfection and decontamination since the discovery of antiseptics.
